Meet the Artist Reception: Saturday, November 10th from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.

Daniel Heron was born in Detroit in 1948 to Millard and Estelle. His father was a Baptist minister, who along with his mother, gave him a strong foundation for life. His mom fostered his early interest in art by providing him with painting and drawing lessons.

The artist's work is inspired by early native American arts in all of its forms —- the colorful geometrics of the Great Plains tribes' bead work, the Navajo' weavings, the Mimbres' pottery, the designs and motifs painted on teepees -- horses, weapons, faces; and the mysterious rock paintings found all over the American West. He draws from these earthy primitive colors, textures, designs and stylized figures and combines these elements to create new abstract forms. He has also been influenced by the abstract expressionists.

Heron began marketing his paintings in 1997 when Billy Hoxie, then owner of Watermelon Sugar Gallery in Traverse City, Michigan, first accepted his work. About a year later, the artist met Joe DeLuca. Joe is well-known throughout the Midwest for his abstract paintings and is a retired art professor from Western Michigan University. His advice and mentoring have greatly shaped Heron's work.

Amy Kerr Hardin has been an oil painter for four decades ever since she discovered painting at the age of twelve. At about the same time she entered junior high school and took a science class titled “Time, Space, and Matter”. Here she gained a lifelong fascination with the physical universe - - those properties known and those of theory became Amy’s area of interest.

This collection titled “Time, Space, and Matter” is an homage to that long-ago science class which inspired that nascent artist with an inquisitive mind.

Mythology, fantasy, and the world of dreams is woven into these works. Amy also took inspiration from the study of the human mind’s perception of the universe. Bilateralisation, also known as “left-brain/right-brain” plays an important role in this collection. Each piece stimulates both the linear left hemisphere and the holistic right hemisphere. These paintings represent both our inner and outer universes.

Amy’s style is bold and meant to be attention-grabbing. They are not intended to be the docile companions of beige sofas. Her works have been purchased regionally, nationally and internationally by collectors with an eye for her bold style and confident hand.

Amy maintains a busy studio overlooking the beautiful woods of Williamsburg, Michigan. Each season brings new light and new inspiration to her and her work.

James Blanchard's "Fordite" Jewelry

Fordite (or “Detroit Agate”) was taken in its raw form from the spray booth at the Ford River Rouge plant in the 1970s. Chunks of layered automotive paint were painstakingly scraped from the conveyor, then cut and polished into gems. Patterns emerge from the Fordite depending on the angle of the cut or depth of the polishing. Since technology has replaced the spray booth, Fordite is becoming increasingly rare and valuable.

Is that a... ring!?

James Blanchard makes jewelry because it feels good. Each tiny sculpture he creates inspires him to make another. Working primarily in sterling silver, clean lines are formed using simple geometry and balance. He considers his approach to be “contemporary.”

Typically, his pieces are constructed using bright metal and a gemstone as the focal point. Lately, he’s been experimenting with Fordite cabochons set in oxidized sterling settings that have been filed to create a distressed finish.

Because he didn’t go to art school, he considers himself an artist of his own making. James rarely works from sketches, relying on an uncanny ability to transmit designs directly from his brain to his hands. His hope is that the work stimulates the senses and evokes questions.

James shows at about 5 art fairs annually and is represented exclusively through Gallery Fifty in his hometown of Traverse City, Michigan.

Ceramic artist Cathy Broski's work is steeped in archetypal and personal symbolism. Figures, houses, boats and pottery are all vessels to contain things we hold dear, and sometimes those things we would cast off. Cathy chose these forms to work with because they have several levels of meaning she finds intriguing to explore. She loves found objects, because of their wear and marks of their journeys. This is the feel Cathy tries to achieve on her surfaces by using a layering technique.

Cathy begins each piece on the potters wheel or with slabs. The pieces grow with the application of coils or additional slabs. When each piece is completed, She carves or textures the surface. The base colors of terra sigilattas and slips are applied and fired. Once the first firing is complete, Cathy applies and wipes off a combination of stains and glazes, then fires again to cone 6. This process is repeated until the desired effect is achieved.

Since receiving her BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute in 1990, Cathy has worked in the ceramics field in many capacities. Presently she is represented by numerous galleries, teaches several pottery classes, instructs workshops, sells work at art fairs, and has been published in several ceramic periodicals. In 2000, she and her husband built a studio right outside their backdoor. And in 2007 they completed a 40 cu ft gas car kiln.

Carolyn Hudson: Attention to Detail

Carolyn Hudson draws her inspiration from the local landscape and wildlife and she is best known for her beach stone drawings and dog portraits. She started her career working primarily with graphite, but slowly added colored pencil to her repertoire and has been working strictly with that medium for the past twenty-five years. She has recently added the silver-point drawing to the mix which has the feel of her old roots in graphite. Hudson is a signature member of the Colored Pencil Society of America and received her bachelor of art degree from Waynesburg University.

Raised in the shadow of New York City and deeply influenced by two older sisters who were highly involved in the arts, Chip Gadek learned at any early age the intoxication of creativity. “When I was a teen, I would play hooky from school and go to all the great New York museums — the Met, the Museum of Modern Art the Guggenhiem — I’d spend the whole day there," he says. "And even now, with 25 years of building high quality furniture, I still consider myself, first and foremost, an artist.”

Gadek's schooling took him to Colorado State University where majoring in Painting gave him absolutely no real world job abilities. After college, he moved to northern Michigan. While working as a graphic artist at a small printing company Gadek was selling two-dimensional work at regional galleries. Slowly, the paintings he was selling evolved into unique mirrors and tables. After 15 years, Chip left his job as a graphic artist to put all of his time into building ‘art furniture.’ Now with more then a thousand pieces under his belt, furniture is still what he wants to create. “I still paint for myself, but I really enjoy making things that can be used on a daily basis,” he says.

The artist now sells work in galleries throughout Michigan, Florida, Arizona and California. This is where he can work on new ideas, creating furnishings that push the envelope. And of course, this is where potential customers that might order special items, can see the beautiful handcrafted work that he offers. “My work is contemporary, but not modern. It has the ability to look good in any surrounding.” Like all fine craftsman, he only uses traditional joinery methods, such a mortise and tenon and dovetails; doing as much of the work as possible, by hand, including layer upon layer of hand-rubbed oil finishes.

Post Urban - Northern Mid-West: New Work by Rufus Snoddy

Rufus Snoddy moved from Los Angeles to northern Michigan eight years ago, and this show is his response to that change. The artist describes his "head space" as The Wizard of Oz meets Alice in Wonderland while creating this new body of work. Sticks, twigs and accumulations of nature have replaced the motherboards, industrial remnants and collections of urban refuse. Elements of urban angst have slowly morphed into serene textures of a more natural environment. Though Snoddy is "not in Kansas," nor L.A. anymore, he has been seduced by the Midwestern spirit and is loving it.

Artist Statement
Northern Michigan is a long way from Los Angeles, evidenced by the colorful reactions I often get when bringing up my city of origin. The most common reactions are those of overwhelming traffic, way too many cars and way too many people. Most L.A. natives have these sentiments also. Other reactions might include the typical urban issues of crime, vice and corruption. The clichéd “Land of fruits and nuts” has also been heard rolling off the lips of some. All of these, clichés included, fueled my creative drive while growing up and living in el cuidad de Los Angeles. So, some may wonder what the affects of relocating to Northern Michigan are having on the creative inspiration of a transplanted west coast visual artist. I am one of those.
Having worked and lived here for eight years, a budding Michiganian, this is the first work I have done from the perspective of a genuine hybrid. As with Los Angeles, my day to day living environment has had much influence on my sensibilities and direction. The Wizard of Oz meets Alice in Wonderland is somewhat descriptive of the head space I have been in for the past two years while creating most of this work. Trying to find place and direction as an African American male, after following a now ex-wife back to her home, was a bit like Alice following the white rabbit with the watch.
Living on the northern bays of Lake Michigan is often dreamlike in its beauty and charm. It's also simultaneously confusing in its provincial seasonal rituals, to one who grew up in a place of constant seventy degree weather. The seemingly slavish-like devotion to hunting and fishing seasons is at odds with my city-dwelling sensibilities. Worlds of gang culture, movers and shakers and the commonplace nattily attired gives way to a world of farmers, outdoor recreation and camo.
I have learned to embrace the grays and whites of winter and celebratory colors of fall. Northern cool blues and greens replace the western warmth of reds, ochres and browns. The melted snow and other of Mother Nature's liquids are absorbed by the soil and our souls. Spring blossoms, and preps for harvest fill our world. They are slowly replacing the Pacific Coast's Urban-Chic yields of asphalt, vanity and beaches. Sticks, twigs and accumulations of nature replace the motherboards, industrial remnants and collections of urban refuse. Symbolic textures of urban angst are slowly morphing into the serene textures of a more natural environment.
The political climate is the one constant. Dogma tends to be more conservative in these parts than the west coast. But the “Mickey Rats” are found on the “yellow brick road” as they are found in the “Hills of Beverly”, just not as often. It is becoming commonplace for me to feel like Alice, swimming in a pool of my own tears and offending those who are swimming with me by talking about the things I love.
Though “I am not in Kansas” nor L.A., I am being seduced by the Midwestern spirit and loving it.

Gallery Fifty Downtown is thrilled to be featuring Amy Kerr Hardin's beautiful floral oil paintings during the DTCA Art Walk on Friday, May 7th. For nearly four decades, Amy has been addicted to the art of oil painting. Her habit started at the age of twelve when she saved her allowance money to purchase a paint-by-numbers kit from the local dime store, and she proceeded to completely ignore the printed outline and simply flipped over the cardboard, to design her own painting.

Amy soon discovered a local parochial high school that had a top-notch art department. Although, she is not herself Catholic, she begged and pleaded to be allowed to attend this special school. Under the guidance of some very talented teachers, her painting skills blossomed and matured. She learned how to stretch canvas, paint with palette knives, work on enormous murals, and hunt down original subject matter.

Her paintings articulate a depth of field through strong foregrounds that create a dynamic tension and a sense of space rarely found in typical photorealism. Amy’s floral paintings seem to be alive with the wind, and her beach rock studies give the impression that one can actually reach out and feel the cold wet smoothness of her subject.

This is not your average jewelery. Creator and owner Jodi Rae Brownstein is a skilled designer, artist and metalsmith specializing in one-of-a-kind hand-fabricated creations for both women and men. Choosing materials like sterling silver, high karat golds, semiprecious and precious gems and various minerals and fossils, Jodi Rae uses diverse signature techniques to create wearable pieces that are truly unique in design.

Each piece is rendered through an intimate process combining techniques such as forging, stamping, casting, various stone-setting methods and finishing techniques including oxidation, brushed, matte and high-polish. The finished product is one that is simple in shape and symmetry yet complex in detail, much like the natural and urban worlds from which the artist takes her inspiration. "It's a very personal process," Jodi Rae says of her craft, "I create it as it comes out of me, and I feel like it becomes a sort of pure extension of myself."

The reflected similarities between the artist and her work can certainly be found in their capacity to be edgy but classic and timeless in design, soft and strong in shape and character, and endlessly versatile in context. "I am so inspired by the beauty of the forms and shapes found in nature and in our modern world," she states, "that I had to incorporate them directly into my art." Her particular affinity for different stones and minerals has led her to put elements like jasper, agate and fossils at the heart of many her creations.

"It's an adventure for me every time I start a new design;" says the artist, "I often end up in a completely different place than I anticipate, and that's an exhilarating process for me." She enthusiastically claims her aspiration to be like the visually textured stones and minerals she uses in her jewelry, comparing the complex appeal of nature's patterns to the visual story she expresses in her finished pieces. It's a story she feels is constantly evolving, like her own journey through design and concept on the path of her trade, both in the past and into the future. Ann Loveless is a native of Frankfort, Michigan, which is located on the shore of Lake Michigan. She attended Michigan State University and received her degree in Clothing & Textile Design. Evoking early childhood memories

Traverse City artist Linda Chamberlain's primary focus in designing her mixed media paintings is the exploration of man and his relationship to the natural environment. Her pieces evoke conceptual references to nature, botanical themes, the figurative form and early childhood memories.

Linda draws upon the simplification associated with the Arts and Crafts Period. She creates works that eliminate the superfluous in life, reducing reality to the essentials. The artist's most recent series explores man's fascination with life and spirituality. The bird image is used to examine this quest. Childlike figures lead us to the path of our own introspective journey. Man's fascination with his surroundings is examined within these confines.

We've been carrying Linda's original paintings and assemblages for years, but recently we've added her giclee prints and blank greeting cards. Minervini receives C.R.A.F.T. Design Challenge recognition

Gallery Fifty owner Christie Minervini was recently honored in a design competition held in conjunction with the Buyers Market of American Craft in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She won one of three grand prizes awarded in the C.R.A.F.T. Design Challenge. (One display pedestal. Five contemporary art objects. A box of props. Make magic.)

Minervini won $350 in merchandise vouchers good at the show. "I was thrilled to learn that I'd won. While I was proud of my design, I didn't feel it was my best work, so I was totally surprised," said Minervini.

Judge Kristen Godsey commented, "The jewelry displayed on the tree is clever and effective, as is the placement of the rounded, metallic objects in a circular pattern in the scene. I like the use of the flowing, earth-toned fabric, with just a smattering of rocks, to create a simple statement."

Techno Romantic Jewelry by Thomas Mann

Louisiana artist Thomas Mann has been represented by Gallery Fifty from the beginning. You could even say he had a hand in its creation, but more about that later.

Tom describes himself as an artist working in the medium of jewelry and sculpture. I describe him as the father of art jewelry. For over thirty years he has reshaped the way we think about ornamentation, and has elevated great design with non-precious materials to the status of fine jewelry. His one-off pieces are highly collectable and we've done extremely well with his limited production line.

Tom's primary design vocabulary combines industrial aesthetics and materials and with evocative romantic themes and imagery. He calls this design system "Techno Romantic." Though it is not the only design mode in which he works, it is the one for which he is best known.

The artist lives and works in New Orleans where he oversees a jewelry design and production studio, a sculpture studio and gallery.

Note: I took a week-long class from Tom at Peters Valley Craft School in July 2004. I'd been planning to open a gallery, but still had serious concerns. Not only was he an excellent instructor, he was an invaluable resource for my gallery questions. I left the school with several beautiful Thomas Mann knock-off designs and renewed ambition. Lively and useful centerpieces

California artist Marge Margulies' work is organic and flowing, often inspired by things such as topographical maps and flower arrangements. Elements of shape are combined, emphasizing fluid forms and rich and subtle color relationships. Each piece is wheel-thrown, then altered or squashed, and painted with colored glazes. They are lightweight as a result of her intention to throw in an even, well-balanced way.

After graduating from the Philadelphia College of Art in 1981 Marge worked for years as a professional studio potter in Philadelphia. In 2008 she moved to northern California where she creates these lively and useful centerpieces.

Oregon glass artist Otter Rotolante combines ten years of flameworking experience with offhand techniques to bring a wide array of functionality and designs in his artwork.

"In other mediums of art it's always about the end result, the finished product. In the blown glass medium, however, the process of creating the finished piece is its own form of art. Much like a well- choreographed dance, it's almost like 'behind the scenes' performance art. The end result is a tangible work of glass art, its minute details of form and shape revealing to the studied eye a quick peek behind the curtain for a glimpse of its creation. This makes blown glass as an art medium tense and dramatic, with the contrasting results of (hopefully) graceful and fluid forms. The resulting combination of skills, knowledge, and practice needed to pull it off makes blown glass a very exciting medium for me."

The glassware is made from sturdy borosilicate. All color in the pieces are authentic colored glass — no paints or enamels are used. Each piece is torchworked entirely by the artist. Otter usually creates ocean scenes, but because Gallery Fifty is located on Lake Michigan, Otter has created a line of freshwater fish for us!

We've just completed our fall re-do of the gallery. As many of you know, we pride ourselves on the fact that our space always appears fresh. This is because we work on relatively short consignment terms with many of our artists, allowing us to bring in new work every 2-3 months. And being a stickler for merchandising and interior design, this almost always means that I'm reworking the entire gallery to create appealing "environments" for our customers.

For fine wall art, we're now featuring the work of Larry Fox, Linda Chamberlain, Ginnie Cappaert, Christine Towner, Julie Pearson, Christine Krzyszton, Jacob Sposito, Robert Fitzke, Amy LeJeune Harper, Sue Bullock, Anne Higgins, Nancy Crisp, Robert Graham, Cherie Haney and of course, our best-selling artist Renee Hartig.

I'm really excited about two new studio jewelry designers we're introducing. Jodi Rae Brownstein is from Chicago and works in brushed sterling silver and natural stone cabachons. Her jewelry is deceivingly simple and contemporary with universal shapes and designs. We're also showing her work in 18k gold with diamonds and cut semi-precious stones. Austin jewelry artist, Jaime Jo Fisher also works in sterling silver, but her designs are more organic and she uses found objects such as bits of beach glass or vintage buttons. You can see examples of their work under the "studio jewelry" category of this blog.

We're also getting a lot of holiday merchandise in! Actually, we're having a tough time figuring out how and where to display everything... As in years past, we feature "50 Gifts Under $50" and "100 Gifts Under $100." I'm really happy with some of the new gifts we've brought in, and we'll continue to show some of our old favorites and best sellers. Breaking Boundaries: The Art of the Quilt

Gallery Fifty is thrilled to announce the opening of "Breaking Boundaries: The Art of the Quilt." Twenty-five regional art quilters were selected to participate by gallery owner Christie Minervini and guest curator Desiree Vaughn.

Artists were chosen for their unique design abilities, skilled craftsmanship and overall commitment to fiber art. Vaughn is being featured in the adjacent Rinaldo Gallery with her latest work.

Awards were announced earlier this month. First place and a $300 cash prize went to Pat McKean for "Blaze" (see photo); second place and $200 went to Jill Ault for "Divided Circle: Anthracite"; and third place with $100 went to Lenore Crawford for "Hybrid Lily III".

Tour of the Pacific Rim

Over Mother's Day Weekend we participated in a fundraising event for Child and Family Services. The "Festival of Tables" drew large crowds and enabled Gallery Fifty to showcase a few of its artists including Christian Burchard and Janine Sopp. We partnered with Select Fine Wine to create a display table with the theme,"Tour of the Pacific Rim."

Massachusetts designer Rebecca Townsend has packaged these wonderful soaps and potpourris. We find that they make popular "hostess" gifts. (Think: "I spent a week at your beautiful lakeside cottage and all you got was this lousy bottle of wine." You can be a lot more creative than that!)

At Gallery Fifty, we are really excited and proud to present a comprehensive showing of Jerry Gates' work. The show consists of both framed representational and abstract mixed media paintings. Over seventy-five pieces will by on display and available for viewing on-line at www.galleryfifty.com.

Jerry has been an experimental artist for many years because of his fascination with light and color, surface and texture, subject matter and form. His deep belief in the Jungian premise of a "collective consciousness" has inspired him to create content that will be inwardly understood. His aim has been to take the viewer past the obvious to discover that which lies beyond the surface, with an intangible, but deep understanding of his or her own personal aesthetics.

Jerry holds a Master of Fine Arts degree. He has been an Assistant Professor of Art at Central Michigan University and is currently Adjunct Professor of Art, Northwestern Michigan College.

Artist Statement:
My work, I suspect, is a product of Jungian psychology and familiarity with things past and present. Not unlike the Romantics of the 18th Century, I have attempted to capture both the beautiful and the sublime, something fleeting but still in stasis, something inwardly understood in a universal sense. It is this collective consciousness that I try to tap, a soul tweeking, if you will; this "I think I have been there before" or experienced "this" before.

Someone once said "Art is a lie that enables us to see the truth." When one unearths what is beneath their own aesthetic, they become enlightened to the infinite possibilities of the creative endeavor.

It has been my goal to represent this philosophy by testing my curiosity in different media and subject matter. This has helped me to codify my own existence as silent observer, participant and explorer.

Fiber as inspiration for glass

Alaska artist Tamara Johannes is a multi-media artist who has worked clay, metal, fiber and most recently warm glass. She creates these great handcrafted, kiln-fired, dichroic glass barrettes. They make wonderful gifts of "wearable" art.

Tamera was originally a hot glass beadmaker, but then she began experimenting with the art of fusing glass as a way of combining torch work components into more complex glass jewelry. Using dichroic glass has become one of her trademarks.

Early work in fiber and clay were instrumental in forming a basis for work with glass. Many of her designs have elements of her original quilt work and patterns.

Leaving our shell behind

The world we live in, even where we have made a mess of it, is full of incredible sights. Tennessee artist Jennifer Adair believes that art should make us pause in our rush to wherever we are supposed to be. "Art should make us remember to be alive right here, right now," she says. "Art should help us see the world we live in."

Jennifer is fascinated by how hard people work in order to make things that look like they were made by something other than a human. "It takes a mollusk to make a nautilus shell. Humans use computers to create fractal images; wind does it with some sand. An agate, a sunset, a butterfly wing: our imperfect copies, whether of manmade stone or canvas and paint, require great effort on our part."

So her glass is about color and light, texture and pattern. And if she really gets it right, an explorer from some other world would wonder, when he looks at her work, what creature had left his shell behind.

Fun and 'folky'

Pennsylvania artist Ed Brownlee creates functional, joyful ceramics often referencing art history, folk art and cartoons. He creates with the collector in mind. "My pieces are ambassadors of enjoyment and individuality," he says.

His ceramics are wheel thrown stoneware and fired to cone 6. Ed formulates his own glazes and overglazes utilizing a “majolica” technique of overglaze decoration, but at a higher temperature. Ed received his BFA from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1985; MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1987.

Tiles for the nature enthusiast

Ceramic artist Leif Spörck creates these incredible stonewear tiles with themes dear to any northern Michigan resident. Nature, botanicals, fish and wildlife — each with his unique design and glaze color.

Leif's tiles are approximately 5" x 5" and have a hole on the back for hanging. They are for indoor/ outdoor use. Gallery Fifty always has a great selection of his work. They make great "guy gifts" and are popular with collectors.

Spörck Tileart was founded by Leif Spörck. Being the son of accomplished ceramic artists, Leif has had his hands in clay since he was 2 years old. After receiving his pre-law degree from Hope College in Holland, Michigan, Leif decided to pursue his desire to design and produce a line of artistic ceramic tiles that would reflect his love of the natural environment. He decided to design a line of tiles that represent his perceptions of the colorful wildlife, the blue waters, the verdant farms and the various and beautiful locations that surround him.

Rediscovering the old; Creating the new

Tennessee artist Paula Mealka enjoys experimenting with dfferent art elements to create interesting, fun and sometimes functional fused glass work.

Fused glass can be subtle, elegant and often bold in color, shape, texture and design. Her work continuously changes and matures as she discovers new methods and skills. Paula uses many traditional fused glass techniques, but she also loves to make things up as she goes and by doing so, creating something new and wonderful. "Of course, this reckless abandon sometimes leads to disaster," she says. "But more often then not, it adds an interesting touch to my work."

She works with deep in glass (1/2-1 inch), creating pieces with depth and texture. One of the methods Paula incorporates into her work is taking glass to a very high temperature and when it is molten, combing a design through it. She also enjoys weaving glass stringers to construct intricate patterns.

For the artist, fused glass is the perfect medium to rediscover old techniques, create new ones by accident and continue her journey of art and discovery every time she opens the kiln.

Hand silkscreened for richness and saturation

For the past few years, we've done really well with a hand-silkscreened card line from New York called "Great Arrow." The designs are fresh and original and the quality is amazing. Many of our customers buy the cards as affordable artwork in order to frame!

The process starts with a new card concept from their artists. The designer provides sketches, paintings, digital designs, or even a three-dimensional collage. Great Arrow's in-house design team then prepares the art for the silkscreen process. Their colorist brings the original art to life using a palette of more than 500 colors of ink, including metallic colors and clear varnishes. Next, the design goes to print.

Screenprinting is a stencil technique in which the printer uses a rubber-bladed squeegee to force ink through the mesh of a screen; only the open areas of the mesh allow the ink to pass through. The squeegee process is repeated for each color on each card, with time allowed between each pass for the cards to dry. Great Arrow might be able to make cards faster with automated printing machines, but patience isn't just a virtue — it's also a value. Individual cards run from 2.85 - 3.35 (you can't buy a lousy Hallmark card for that little!)

Hand silkscreen printing is physical work, but it doesn't demand strength as much as feel. An experienced printer can control the pressure on the squeegee better than any machine, allowing us to reproduce the subtleties in an artist's original work. That's why artists love to design for Great Arrow — their cards have a richness and saturation that simply cannot be replicated by standard lithography.

Light the dark corners of your world

Washington state artist Beth Spadafora creates these contemporary and colorful glass nightlights. Many layers of colored glass are cut and assembled, then fused together in a hot kiln resulting in these playfully elegant nightlights that cast an ethereal glow. Light the dark corners of your world with these hip nightlights!

The look she tries to evoke is casual and somewhat organic, a little bit crazy and just plain fun. "I believe in spontaneity both in art and in life," she says. "Although the glass does take a number of steps in the fabrication, the design work is usually quite spontaneous."

All work is made with special glass formulated especially for kiln firing. The process involves cutting, shattering and rearranging layers of colored glass and then firing it in a kiln to melt it all together. This new piece is then cut into the shapes required for nightlights and fired again into final form. The resulting glass is wildly colorful with an intense depth. Abstract images appear to those who take the time to observe.

Original paintings as personal adornment

Ananda Khalsa draws inspiration from Asian art, natural forms, and the cool sleekness of metal. Each of her pieces contains an original painting on paper, which is set behind hand ground glass in fine and sterling silver. Much of her work is accented with the highest quality semiprecious stones and/or high karat gold.

Another important influence in Ananda's work is the powerful symbolism behind each of the subjects she chooses to paint. At Gallery Fifty, we're representing her jewelry with the following images...

Bluebird: This little bird is a universal symbol of happiness and the coming of spring.

Crane: The elegant courting dance of the crane has made this graceful bird a symbol of love and romance.

Dragonfly: With its delicate and graceful wings reflecting and refracting light, the Dragonfly represents new light and joyfulness.

Koi Fish: According to a Chinese legend, a Koi was once turned into a dragon after fearlessly climbing a treacherous waterfall, making them symbolic of courage and strength.

Lotus: Sprouting from the murky mud at the bottom of the pond, the lotus rises above the water to create it’s exquisite bloom. This makes it a symbol of purity and enlightenment in many eastern philosophies.

I've admired Ananda's work since before we opened the gallery nearly three years ago. Selected Works: Five Decades

"Selected Works: Five Decades" is our current exhibition of drawings, paintings and constructions by Michigan artist Joe De Luca. The show is up until October 31, 2007, with an artist reception on Thursday, October 18 from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. This is by far the largest show we've installed with upwards of 75 pieces, many very large.

Joe's work can be found in numerous public and private collections. A professor of Art at Western Michigan University for thirty years, he has consistently exhibited in solo and group shows, garnering numerous awards and reviews in national publications.

Artist Statment:

My work is a microcosm of the landscape and deals with my emotional and intuitive responses to my environment. I am fascinated by textured, weathered and time-worn objects and surfaces. The effects considered are those of light, atmosphere and shadow.

Extended travels to Europe, and especially Italy and Portugal, have resulted in important motivational sources in my painting. Italy is a place to better understand my heritage and an environment in which to seek and study high art and architectural treasures. The Etruscan civilization became a significant resource during the early 80's. In recent years, my interest shifted to Portugal, as it seemed a natural extension of my interests in antiquity. This, the oldest country of Europe, offers a powerful, rough presence and unpretentious charm.

I presently work on large-scale canvases and include such materials as tar, cardboard, metal, wood and found objects. The works, if successful, give the appearance of ruined sections of old walls, excavated from a prior ancient setting. The surfaces often reveal multi-layered, richly developed textural patinas through the utilization and combination of paint, collage, inlay and found materials.

Present images attempt to visually appear to mark a passage of time, as well as to describe the metaphysical nature of things. These considerations seem, at this time, to be reasons to dignify a particular space and maintain the delicate balance that life necessitates and demands.

Looking deeper into the spirit

Michigan artist Keith Smith believes art should take the viewer a step beyond the surface of an object. As a result, his paintings are characterized by a vigorous, often unorthodox use of color, accompanied by strong contours. “I try to use color as a way to make the viewer see more than the basic shapes that define what’s already known to us,” he says.

A native of Traverse City, Keith is entirely self-taught though he’s been drawing and painting since his elementary school days. He paints in acrylics to take advantage of their rich hues and quick drying time — allowing him to layer his colors with little waiting, and without compromising the color purity of each layer.

His influences include the usual suspects like van Gogh, Matisse and the other Fauves because of their unusual and innovative use of color. But he has been just as affected by the clarity and boldness of the American west. The work of Native American artists like the late Fritz Scholder and T.C. Cannon, and their adherents, have played a large role in his artistic development, as well.

“The way they use color — unreal and almost bizarre at times — lures you into the picture and has a way of making you look deeper into the spirit of the subject depicted,” he says. “That’s the goal I have with my paintings. I want people to see that ordinary things can be extraordinary in nature.”

Whether it’s a simple barn, galloping horse, talking crow, or tree-lined hillside, his paintings attempt to evoke the emotion, passion and energy of life.

'Flower Series' blooming at Gallery Fifty

Canadian glass artist Robert Held says, "Being physical with color and form is my love. After experimenting with many different media, I discovered glass and was instantly captivated. The clarity of the glass, the roar of the furnaces, the heat, and even the constant danger were all factors that influenced my choice of this difficult yet beautiful medium."

"Glassblowing allows me to explore both painterly concerns and my fascination with surface decoration, while continuing to challenge the other physical and creative skills required to take the vessel shape in ever new directions."

"My intimate relationship (talking to) the hot glass, the laying on of colors, layer upon layer, the addition of textures through broken glass shards, threads of molten glass and other techniques, is an incomparable experience. This fickle, molten mass will allow itself to be coaxed only by those who know its language."

Color and Composition

We just started carrying work by Traverse City artist Carol Spaulding. I've long admired her pastel paintings for their vibrant color combinations and interesting compositions. Her work has a meditative, almost ethereal quality, with a truly original take on landscapes.

“I’m more interested in expressing a feeling than recording something and having it look like what it is,” she said in a 2006 interview with the Glen Arbor Sun. “I really love working with color and not sticking with just trying to put down the color that I was really seeing, to be a little more imaginative.”

“I think that being an artist really tweaks one’s powers of observation. I feel like I’m looking at things more intensely, and sort of with a purpose, because I’m always thinking about responding and expressing something from what I’m seeing,” she said.
